MSU researchers secure competitive USDA grant

...An MSU-CVM research team was one out of only four groups chosen from more than 50 submitted proposals to USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture. This is the first time USDA-NIFA has granted such funding through their newly established Aquaculture Research program. The goal of the funded research is to support the development of new science-based information and innovation to address current aquaculture industry constraints.
Principal investigator Attila Karsi and his colleagues including Dr. Mark Lawrence, MSU-CVM associate dean for research, will use the grant award to study new vaccine candidates for Edwardsiella ictaluri, one of the most important pathogens affecting the state's channel catfish aquaculture industry.  read more...

Veterinary student gains skills during fellowship

MISSISSIPPI STATE -- While many students took a break this summer from the rigors of college life, one Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine student spent her time researching amoeba-related diseases.
Janet Gomez, a fourth year doctor of veterinary medicine student, spent nine weeks in the Dr. James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program. She was part of a group of 10 students selected out of 263 applicants. The program gave her experience in epidemiology, the branch of medicine related to the causes and possible control of diseases. read more....

MISSISSIPPI STATE -- When John and Paula Cormane took their dog to the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine, they could only hope he would be able to walk back out the same doors they carried him through.
A month earlier, Dirty, a 13-year-old pit bull, had begun walking very unsteadily. Soon, he was falling over and unable to stand. His owners, residents of Alexandria, Louisiana, took him to their local veterinarian, who then referred them to the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine.  read more...

Allergies more than a nuisance for pets

JACKSON -- Sneezing, itchy skin and swollen, watery eyes are hallmarks of spring and summer for some humans. But allergies can affect pets, too.
Dr. Juli Gunter, board-certified veterinary dermatology specialist and assistant professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences at the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine, said sensitivities to fleas and environmental elements, such as grass, tree and weed pollens and house dust mites, are the most common allergies in dogs and cats. read more...
